I want to talk a little about buying flowers… Did you know that The British-Grown Flower industry is now worth £121m – up from £82m in 2015 – following years of decline owing to imported stems, figures reveal. “Last year homegrown flowers accounted for 14% of the £865m worth of all stems sold in the UK, compared with 12% three years ago, according to a report by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs." I find this fact amazing and wonder what I can do to increase this percentage. I know that my seasonal Welsh grown flowers are valued by those who buy them, but how do we get the message to more people about buying local? Well I have an idea… Rather than fill this blog with how horrid imported flowers are, I am going to fill it with how wonderful my flowers are, so here goes… As of today, (off the top of my head). I have growing and ready to cut … Roses, Snap Dragons, Cornflowers, Feverfew, Scabious, Penstemons, Lychnis, Sunflowers, Stocks, Herbs, Mint, Lavender, Nicotiana, Lupins, Pinks, Achilea, Grasses, Salvia’s, Corncockle, Lady’s Mantle, Foxgloves, Cosmos, Covent garden Gyp’s, Sunflowers, Daisies, Delphinium, Ammi, Calendula, Dahlia, Love in the mist…. And lots more.... Don’t forget you can still sign up to my subscription flowers, to be delivered to you weekly, fortnightly or monthly. I know lots of wonderful flower growers across Wales and the UK, so please buy local. Here is a wonderful map: https://www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk/members-map to help you find the one local to you. In other news, I took part in a photo shoot for TyfuCymru www.tyfucymru.co.uk. I’m not sure I am going to take up modelling, but I really enjoyed myself, thanks to Vince Jones the wonderful photographer, http://wholepictureweddings.co.uk/ And of course no June would have been complete without Vegstock .. What a wonderful day. Dates for your diary: 17th August – The Flower Meadow Open Day https://www.facebook.com/events/270565353866385/

Well, what a great start to May with my Subscription Flowers going live for the first time. I have had such a fabulous response, and now only have a few spaces left for this, so let me know asap if you would like a weekly/fortnightly/monthly bouquet delivered to your door. I enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at The Hafod Foxglove Fair, selling and talking to people about my flowers. What an amazing venue this is. If you haven’t visited, do, the walks are breath-taking. I also attended The Royal Welsh Spring Smallholders Festival. It was so lovely to meet up with my fellow ‘Flowers From the Farm’ members, our flower display looked stunning in the entrance hall. Our Welsh grown flowers received a great response. This month’s task is the Chelsea Chop…. To Chop or not.. It’s the perfect time of year to treat your garden to a traditional Chelsea Chop, The Chelsea Chop is a trick that gardeners use around the same time as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show each year. The aim is a longer flowering period for many perennials. The Chelsea Chop can be used on most perennials, and the nearer the plant is to flowering you do your chop, the longer the delay to flowering will be. Chop back your perennial plant to up to a third. I Chelsea Chop about a third of my perennials, this will delay their flowering period. Those plants that has been chopped will be coming into flower, as the first ones to flower begin to fade. This will then give you a longer flowering period. If you give it a go, let me know and we can compare photos. Dates for your diary 15th June - Grow Your Own Cut Flowers Workshop at The Flower Meadow. A full day's course, with everything you need to grow your own flowers. This relaxed day is suitable for all abilities, from total beginners to the seasoned gardener. It will teach you how to rethink your garden and to bring out the best. https://www.facebook.com/events/372478880029305/ 17th August – Open Day at the Flower Meadow . £5.00 to include Tour, Cake and Tea/Coffee Below is the facebook event https://www.facebook.com/events/270565353866385/

Wow what busy time April has been.!! What with being out and about and sowing and growing. I supported ‘Flowers From the Farm’ with my fellow flower growers at RHS Cardiff where we were very proud to be presented with a Sliver Gilt Award. I have also just taken over as the Welsh Coordinator for ‘Flowers from the Farm’. It’s a great organisation to support British grown flowers, do check out the website. https://www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk/ April has also seen me launch The Flower Meadow Subscription Flowers. Seasonal flowers can be delivered weekly/fortnightly/monthly and start from £10.00.. Message me to arrange yours. Well if there is one thing you need to do in April is take a look at our Dahlias, whether they are ones you have stored or new one delivered this month. Make sure you check them over and pot up in a large pot, they are not keen on being squashed and need room to grow. Put them in the greenhouse/windowsill/conservatory and give them a good water and they should be sprouting in 2-3 weeks. Plant out after hardening off and the risk of frost has gone. Dates for your diary 18/19th May – Royal Welsh Smallholders Spring Festival – I will be there decorating the entrance and selling flowers with my fellow flower growers, please do drop by and say hello 17th August – Open Day at the Flower Meadow. £5.00 to include tour, Cake and Tea/Coffee Below is the facebook event https://www.facebook.com/events/270565353866385/
